Linux
Supported: Fedora 39+, RHEL/Alma/Rocky 10, Debian 13+ and Ubuntu 24.04+. TuxShell needs GTK 4 and WebKitGTK 6.0. Remote hosts need GNU find for the file browser.
Remote desktops in their own window use FreeRDP 3 (freerdp on Fedora, freerdp3-x11 on Debian and Ubuntu), which the packages recommend and install where available. Remote desktops in a tab need nothing extra.
AppImage
Runs on any distribution:
chmod +x TuxShell-1.5.3-x86_64.AppImage
./TuxShell-1.5.3-x86_64.AppImage
Flatpak
For any distribution with Flatpak and Flathub set up. The GNOME runtime it needs is installed from Flathub along with it:
flatpak install --user TuxShell-1.5.3-x86_64.flatpak
flatpak run io.github.vgrigolaia.TuxShell
In the Flatpak, ssh runs inside the sandbox; local shell tabs, the 1Password CLI and FreeRDP run on your system. Its data is kept in ~/.var/app/io.github.vgrigolaia.TuxShell/, so export your hosts from another TuxShell (Preferences → Hosts) and import them there. Updates: install the next release's .flatpak the same way.
macOS beta
Download TuxShell-1.5.3-universal.dmg (Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 12 or newer), open it and drag TuxShell to Applications.
The app isn't notarized by Apple yet, so the first start is blocked:
- Open TuxShell once.
- Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Click Open Anyway.
Or, in Terminal:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/TuxShell.app
TuxShell uses the ssh that comes with macOS. Optional, with Homebrew: brew install freerdp for remote desktops in their own window, and the 1Password CLI for 1Password references.
macOS support is new, so please report anything that doesn't work.
Check the download
Each release has a SHA256SUMS file, and the .dmg has its own .sha256:
sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS
shasum -a 256 -c TuxShell-1.5.3-universal.dmg.sha256
Updates
TuxShell checks GitHub for a new release at startup (Preferences → About; you can turn it off). It only links to the new release; it never downloads or installs anything itself.
Planned: a signed dnf/apt repository so updates come with your system, Flathub, a Homebrew tap, and a notarized macOS build.
