FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask first.

Does TuxShell replace my ssh?

No. It runs the ssh on your system, so ~/.ssh/config, keys, agents and ProxyJump behave exactly as in a terminal.

Where are my passwords kept?

Only in your system keyring, if you allow saved passwords, or in 1Password or KeePassXC through a reference. Never in TuxShell’s own files, and exports never contain passwords. See Passwords.

Does it work on macOS?

Yes, as a beta for macOS 12 or newer, on Apple silicon and Intel. The build isn’t notarized yet, so the first start needs Open Anyway in Privacy & Security.

Does it send anything anywhere?

No account, no cloud, no telemetry. Besides your own connections, it pings your hosts for their status (ICMP, can be turned off) and checks GitHub for updates (can be turned off).

Why does the Flatpak have its own data?

Flatpak keeps app data in ~/.var/app/io.github.vgrigolaia.TuxShell/. Export your hosts from another install (Preferences → Hosts) and import them there.

Can I move my hosts to another computer?

Export them as TuxShell JSON (Preferences → Hosts) and import that file on the other computer. Passwords aren’t included; set them up again there.

Will it stay free?

Yes. The app is GPL-3.0-or-later and stays free. End-to-end encrypted sync and team features may come later as a separate paid service.

How do I report a bug?

Open an issue on GitHub with your TuxShell version (Preferences → About), your system, and what happened. For a security problem, email vgrigolaia@outlook.com instead.
